Faculty Women of Color Caucus

Welcome

From its founding, the Faculty Women of Color Caucus has sought to enact inclusion across the university’s campuses, the diversity of faculty women of color in terms of discipline, rank, and appointment, and to promote inclusion across the campus community.

Vision

The Faculty Women of Color Caucus recognizes and values the unique contributions faculty women of color make to ASU and advocates on behalf of their interests, concerns, and desires for a more inclusive institution.

Mission

We affirm the contributions of faculty women of color and provide a distinct space to address the specific challenges we face at ASU; we seek to promote ongoing dialogue about inclusion across the university.

Membership

The Faculty Women of Color Caucus welcomes all affiliates of the university who share our values to join and tune-in to our work.

Meetings

The FWOCC Leadership Circle meets monthly to organize and plan events. There is a campus caucus for each of the four Phoenix Metro ASU campuses. FWOCC activities include a Fall Welcome, campus caucus events for each campus, a writing workshop, and an awards luncheon each year in person, and also hosts virtual research/book talks. Events may include a scholar in residence.

Areas of Activity

Building community and networks of care: The Caucus functions as an internal-facing entity that seeks to create a space at ASU for faculty women of color to discuss, address, and support each other as we navigate the professional and personal challenges of being faculty women of color within academia and at ASU. The caucus helps faculty women of color foster supportive relationships and networks of reciprocal care at ASU. A commitment to building and maintaining an archive of ASU’S FWOCC.

Promoting success: The Caucus seeks to support the success of faculty women of color and recognizes that diverse faculty will define success differently based on multiple factors. The Caucus seeks to empower faculty women of color to suggest and help organize workshops and activities that promote success in multiple ways, including professional development and personal growth.

Advocacy: The Caucus functions as an external-facing entity, advocating for faculty women of color (in aggregate for the most part, not individual cases) at all levels of the university. This includes asking questions about hiring and retention, requesting accurate data and tracking, and working with administrators to hold units accountable to the university’s charter. It also includes promoting dialogue about inclusion across the university as a caucus and in collaboration with other like-minded entities and organizations.
