Guidance for Faculty: Religious Holiday Accommodations

As a university measured by whom we include and how they succeed, we seek to honor the religious practices of the many faiths represented in our community. It continues to be ASU policy to ask faculty to recognize the obligations of our students who may be participating in the observance of religious holidays. To do this, we recommend adding a Canvas announcement such as: I encourage you to contact me to let me know of religious observance(s) that may require accommodation.

To supplement the list of dates of religious observances provided each year by the ASU Libraries, and in collaboration with relevant ASU faculty and staff groups, this semester we have developed brief guides explaining the autumn celebrations of Diwali, Jewish holidays, and Ramadan. These guides provide brief explanations of the holidays and outline possible accommodations students may request.

Guidance to faculty on religious observances are developed in consultation with university faith leaders. We will continue to add guidance for specific religious observances on an ongoing basis.

Religious guidance was developed in collaboration with the following organizations: Council of Religious Advisors (CORA), the Center of Muslim Experience in the US, Hillel Jewish Student Center at ASU,
Indian American Faculty Staff Association, Islamic Community Center of Tempe, and Jewish American Faculty Staff Association.
